Esch-sur-Sûre – A Village from a Storybook

Our first stop feels like stepping into a postcard. Esch-sur-Sûre is a tiny village snuggled in a tight bend of the Sûre River, guarded by a thousand-year-old castle on a cliff . As we drive into the valley, you’ll catch sight of the castle ruins of Esch-sur-Sûre perched high on a rock, with the pretty village at its feet. This castle is actually one of Luxembourg’s oldest – its foundations date back to the year 927 , when a knight named Maingaud built a fort here. We’ll wander up the short path to the ruins (it’s a bit steep but short, and the anticipation builds with each step). At the top, you can explore the remnants: a stout stone tower, fragments of walls, and a restored chapel. But the real treat is the panorama – look out and you’ll see the Sûre River encircling the village like a moat, slate-roofed cottages and a church nestled below, and forested hills all around. It’s incredibly picturesque and one of my favorite viewpoints in Luxembourg. Don’t worry, the dam itself is an impressive sight – we can stop at the viewing platform on the Burfelt peninsula , which offers a sweeping vista of calm blue waters surrounded by green highlands . It’s hard to believe that under that lake lie a few small farming hamlets sacrificed to create this water source. I’ll share that piece of history, as well as how today the lake is a hub for summer fun (swimming, kayaking) and an important nature reserve. Breathing in the crisp air and seeing the castle-topped village reflected in the water is simply magical.

Bourscheid Castle – King of the River Valley

Next, prepare for a jaw-dropping panorama . We’ll drive up a winding road to Bourscheid Castle , Luxembourg’s largest castle, commanding a hill 150 meters above the Sûre river valley . As we approach, you’ll see why I adore this spot – Bourscheid Castle looks like something out of a fantasy film, with multiple turrets and stout curtain walls crowning a solitary peak. Built around the 10th century and expanded later, Bourscheid once had 11 watchtowers (a whopping six still stand today) and was the seat of powerful lords. We’ll go inside (entry is optional but highly recommended) to roam its ruins and restored sections. I’ll show you the medieval great hall , the remnants of a chapel , and climb a tower or two for views. From up here, the panorama of the River Sûre is astounding – the river makes a big horseshoe bend around the castle foot, and you can see tiny villages and forests spread out below. It’s the kind of view that makes you go quiet in awe (and perhaps channel your inner king or queen of the castle!). There’s an orientation table pointing to nearby hills and sites; on a clear day, you can see as far as the Ardennes in Belgium.

For an even grander perspective, I’ll take you to a special lookout known to locals: the Schëldebësch (Schleedbësch) viewpoint . Just a 5-minute drive or a short hike from the castle, this platform offers a breathtaking view of a bend in the Sûre River with Bourscheid Castle in the distance . It’s a perfect spot to snap that wide-angle shot of castle + river + sky. Often we have this vista all to ourselves – a true hidden gem. Fun fact: Bourscheid Castle is beautifully illuminated at night , and while we likely won’t be here after dark, I’ll show you a photo of it glowing against the night – it might inspire you to return for an evening picnic someday!

History and nature intertwine here. I’ll tell you about the legend of Melusina’s treasure supposedly buried under Bourscheid (Luxembourg loves its legends of Melusina, a mythical mermaid). And how the local villagers long ago used the castle courtyards to shelter livestock when bandits roamed the valleys. As we descend from Bourscheid, keep your eyes out for the Sûre’s river beaches – in summer, you might spot people taking a dip in the gentle currents. One tasty surprise here: Beaufort is famous for its Cassero liqueur – a blackcurrant liquor produced using a centuries-old recipe on site. If the small castle shop is open, we can sample a thimbleful of this sweet dark-purple drink (cheers!). It’s a unique local treat and warms you up on a cold day. I’ll also share Beaufort’s quirky story of Misère : a cliff nearby named after a legend of a grieving widow, but ironically “misery” today is nowhere to be found in this peaceful hamlet.

Just a few minutes’ drive (or a 15-minute forest walk, if you’re up for it) from Beaufort Castle lies one of Luxembourg’s most photographed natural wonders: the Schiessentümpel Waterfall . We’ll follow a gentle trail along a crystal-clear stream until we reach a fairytale scene – three small waterfalls tumbling over mossy rocks under a charming stone footbridge . The sound of the water, the cool spray, and the emerald green setting make it feel like an enchanted glen. This spot is pure magic for photographers and dreamers alike. I’ll happily play photographer for you here – a photo standing on the little arched bridge with cascades beneath is a must-have!
