About Berg Castle

Berg Castle in Colmar-Berg, whose origins date back to the early 15th century, is the main residence of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg and is surrounded by extensive parkland. The flag on the roof of the tower indicates whether the Grand Duke is in or out.

The castle cannot be visited.

History

The Grand Dukes of Luxembourg acquired Colmar-Berg estate in 1845 when Grand Duke William II sought a residence to strengthen ties with the local population. He purchased Berg Castle, which was officially designated as the Grand Duke’s home in 1848.

After Luxembourg’s separation from the Netherlands in 1890, Grand Duke Adolphe bought the castle to maintain the estate. In 1906, William IV replaced the old structure with a new castle, designed by architects Max Ostenrieder and Pierre Funck-Eydt. Completed in 1911, it became the primary residence of the Grand Ducal family.

Facing financial difficulties during the Great Depression, Grand Duchess Charlotte transferred Berg Castle and Grünewald forest to the government in 1934, securing their use as official residences. This arrangement, along with the Grand Ducal Palace, is protected under Article 44 of the Luxembourg Constitution.

During World War II, the Nazis occupied the castle, looted its art, and altered it for re-education purposes. After years of restoration, the Grand Ducal family returned in 1964 when Grand Duke Jean took the throne.
