About Colpach Castle
Colpach Castle dates from the beginning of the 14th century. At the end of the 19th century, the castle became the summer residence of the Hungarian painter Munkácsy and his Luxembourgish wife. The composer Franz Liszt also stayed in Colpach before his death. In 1917, Émile Mayrisch, the Luxembourgish steel industrialist, bought the castle. He and his wife turned the castle into a meeting place for politicians, economists, writers and artists between the two world wars. Today, the castle serves as a rehabilitation centre.
The castle is not open to the public.
History
Originally a small medieval stronghold with a moat, similar to those in Ell and Everlange, Colpach Castle was first mentioned in 1303. In 1628, the Pforzheim family took ownership, later filling in the moat and transforming it into a modest manor house by 1747. In the 19th century, Baron Edouard de Marches managed it as a farming estate and designed the surrounding gardens, which still feature a lake, winding paths, and ornamental trees.
In 1874, his widow, Cécile Papier, married Hungarian painter Michael Munkácsy, and the couple spent summers at the castle. Franz Liszt visited in 1886 shortly before his death. After 1900, Munkácsy’s widow gradually abandoned the estate, passing away in 1915.
Émile Mayrisch, head of ARBED, acquired the castle in 1917 and commissioned architect Sosthène Weis to expand and refine it. Together with his wife Aline, Mayrisch turned Colpach into a cultural hub, hosting prominent figures like Walther Rathenau, André Gide, and Théo van Rysselberghe.
In 1947, Aline Mayrisch donated the castle to the Red Cross, which continues to operate it as a convalescent home, with ongoing improvements over the years.
